Japan deserves
more than a quick look.
A two-week itinerary can tell a much fuller story than a handful of stops on the way somewhere else.
That is the appeal here. Places such as Sakata, Tsuruga, Maizuru and Miyako sit alongside the big names. My cruise-industry background makes me look closely at the route and the onboard fit; Holland America brings an appealing balance for travelers who want their days ashore to stay at the center of the trip.

There is a lot to be said for a ship that feels easy to settle into while the destinations keep changing outside.
Ports beyond the usual circuit.
Tsuruga, Toyama, Sakata and Maizuru appear on selected sailings. Read each route: the two Circle Japan departures are not interchangeable.
A comfortable midsize setting.
Westerdam and Noordam offer traditional cruise-ship comfort, with public spaces for a quiet break as well as places to enjoy the evening.
Dining with a sense of occasion.
The Dining Room and specialty choices add pleasure to the days between ports. Specialty restaurants and packages should be compared separately from the base fare.
Space at the level you choose.
There is a range of staterooms and suites. Neptune and Pinnacle Suite guests receive access to the Neptune Lounge; it is not an all-guest facility.

Japan beyond the headline ports.
Tsuruga, Toyama and Sakata distinguish this circuit. It is a strong choice when regional Japan—not just a repeat of the most familiar names—is the attraction.

Hokkaido gets more than a passing glance.
Otaru and Hakodate bring two different faces of Hokkaido, with Kanazawa and Sakata on the way north. Sokcho provides a Korean contrast to the Japanese calls.

A coastal circuit with a different rhythm.

Stay south, and take your time.
An Osaka overnight and an extended sweep through Kyushu, Hiroshima and Kochi make this a satisfying regional introduction. Late February is a different proposition from the busy spring blossom season.

Japan with a deeper Korean chapter.

From Kobe to Japan’s northern coast.
Sakata, Hakodate, Aomori and Miyako give this circuit a northern emphasis. Kobe and Kochi balance the journey with food, castles and a very different side of the country.
