After more than 75 visits to Japan, the places that interest me are not always the ones printed largest on the map.
Tomonoura, Karatsu, a garden in Takamatsu: these are the names that make Windstar worth a closer look. Add a relaxed ship where the sea is never far away, and you have a very appealing way to experience Japan at a more personal scale.

Several dates follow the same core itinerary. Spring, early autumn and November offer different settings; port order and the Tokyo-area terminal also deserve attention.

These are eight departure choices on the Grand Japan itinerary, not eight completely different routes. Dates and port sequences were checked against Windstar’s official UK GSA site; U.S. fares and booking terms will be confirmed separately.

Grand Japan: early spring
An intimate start to Japan’s spring.
Takamatsu and Tomonoura are the pleasures here: a garden city and a small harbor with real character. This is the core Grand Japan route, before the later spring departures.

Grand Japan: May
Gardens, harbor towns and a taste of Kyushu.
May offers another way to enjoy the same compact Grand Japan route. Pair the ports with the relaxed scale of Star Seeker rather than expecting a different itinerary from the March sailing.

Grand Japan: Kobe to Tokyo
A Kobe start, with Japan close at hand.
Starting in Kobe makes a pre-cruise Kansai stay particularly appealing. The route then brings Takamatsu, Tomonoura and Karatsu into the picture before finishing in Tokyo.

Grand Japan: Tokyo to Osaka
A small-ship introduction with real local flavor.
Shimizu, Kagoshima and Nagasaki lead west before the route turns toward Hiroshima and the Inland Sea. This spring departure runs in the opposite direction to the Osaka departures.

Grand Japan: Osaka to Tokyo
Japan’s smaller places deserve a place on the trip.
Tomonoura and Karatsu give this voyage its character. The May departure follows the established Osaka-to-Tokyo Grand Japan route, with a different seasonal setting.

Grand Japan: September
Keep the small-ship experience. Change the season.
A September alternative to the spring departures, with the same port-rich Tokyo-to-Osaka route. Expect late-summer warmth; this is not being presented as a fall-foliage cruise.

Grand Japan: October
A comfortable rhythm for exploring western Japan.
Takamatsu, Hiroshima and the Kyushu calls make this a rewarding regional journey. It repeats the Osaka-to-Tokyo route, giving you an autumn date to compare.
Nov 11, 2028 – Nov 21, 2028
Grand Japan: November
A later-season look at a favorite route.
This Tokyo-to-Osaka departure offers another seasonal choice for the Grand Japan itinerary. Autumn color depends on place and weather; the small harbors remain the central attraction.
